Ancient sites are an exceptional feature of Sicily. They form a direct link to the people who inhabited the island and include remains from the prehistoric, Phoenician, Carthaginian, Greek and Roman eras. The Greek sites are the most spectacular, containing impressive monuments to Hellenic civilisation in their temples and theatres. According to the British Museum, Sicily boasts some of the largest and best-preserved Greek-style temples in the Mediterranean.
